The Wizards announced Keefe's hiring motivating it by improved numbers in defensive rating, net rating, and opponent three-point percentage (34.5%, second in the league).
It will be Keefe's first official head coaching gig. He previously served as an assistant for a number of NBA teams, first starting his career as a video coordinator for the San Antonio Spurs.
"We are excited for Brian to become our next head coach. Brian is a proven motivator and connector of people," Wizards GM Will Dawkins said.
Keefe was the head coach for 39 Wizards games last season. The Wizards won just 8 of them.
