Ryan Garcia has tested positive for the same banned substance in a second drug test after his win against Devin Haney,
Garcia floored Haney three times en route to an upset victory on April 20 although he did not claim his compatriot’s WBC light-welterweight crown after missing weight for the fight. Garcia's win was called into question after a drug test screened positive for the banned substance ostarine and the 25-year-old has now been flagged for the same drug in a second test.
"Ryan Garcia’s B sample results were returned Thursday [23 May] a.m., one day after being opened. I have the lab reports & the B samples, as expected, matched A samples — both are positive for the banned PED [performance-enhancing drug] ostarine related to VADA tests the day before & after Haney fight," boxing journalist Dan Rafael tweeted.

Garcia has vehemently denied the allegations since news of his first test failure broke three weeks ago. "Everybody knows that I don't cheat. I beat that man fair and square. I have never cheated a day in my life. Never taken a steroid. I don't even know where to get steroids, I don't even know what they look like. I barely take supplements. Big lies, I beat his a**," he said.
A statement released from the fighter's legal team reads: "Ryan Garcia is committed to clean and fair competition and has never intentionally used any banned substance. Soon after being notified of his positive test, Ryan voluntarily had his hair collected and shipped to Dr. Pascal Kintz, the foremost expert in toxicology and hair-sample analysis.
"The results of Ryan’s hair sample came back negative. This is consistent with contamination and demonstrably proves that Ryan had not ingested Ostarine over a period of time — the only way he would have had any advantage whatsoever in the ring.
"Ryan has voluntarily submitted to tests throughout his career, which have always shown negative results. He also tested negative multiple times leading up to the fight against Haney. All of these factors, combined with his ultra-low levels from samples taken on April 19th and 20th (in the billionth of a gram range), point to Ryan being a victim of supplement contamination and never receiving any performance enhancing benefit from the microscopic amounts in his system.
"We are certain that one of the natural supplements Ryan was using in the lead up to the fight will prove to be contaminated and are in the process of testing the supplements to determine the exact source.
Haney, who wants his loss to be overturned to a no-contest, slammed Garcia for making light of his test failures on social media. "It’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty and breaking positive not once, but twice," he wrote.
"Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet he still thinks this is a joke. We put our lives on the line to entertain people for a living. You don’t play boxing. This puts the fight in a completely different light. Despite the disadvantage, I still fought on my shield and got back up. People die in this sport. This isn’t a joking matter."
