Ellie Scotney is boxing's next female superstar - she reminds me of Katie Taylor - Barry McGuigan

Ellie Scotney is turning into a special fighter.

She has had only nine pro fights and has already won and defended the IBF super bantamweight title. Last week Scotney added the WBO crown with another dominating performance against Segolene Lefebvre, who could not cope despite having twice as many fights under her belt.

Praise was universal, including a shoutout from former head of HBO, Lou Dibella, who watched from the United States and posted his approval on social media. You know you are doing something right when significant figures in America are paying attention.

In my view she beats the other champions at super bantam, Yamileth Mercado (WBC) and Erika Cruz Hernandez (WBA), but there is only so long we can hold her at the weight. I think she is one of the best champions in women’s boxing and is destined to go through the divisions.

She is such a great fighter. I can see a bit of Roberto Duran in her in the way she slips and slides and rolls her head. You can see a bit of Katie Taylor in her too, but more professional in her style with none of the traits that Taylor exhibits from her amateur days.

Taylor will throw six punches, whereas Ellie picks out four. When she slips inside your left jab you are in trouble. She will turn you around with a right, bury a left hook into the ribs, step to the right and hit you with a long, looping left followed by a pile-driver right underneath the left elbow.

She stuns opponents with that combination. And all the money is on that last shot. Though Scotney does not have that stoppage yet, that’s because of the standard of opposition but that will come as she goes up in weight.

As it is her opponents don’t understand why they are tiring in fights, why their legs have gone from under them. It’s because they are getting battered around the solar plexus.

Her defence is also excellent. She doesn’t often get hit and certainly not flush. As well as being a superb boxer, Scotney has an amazing personality and a fantastic rapport with the lads in the gym.

South London has had its share of boxing heroes, including among others Don Cockell, Henry Cooper, Frank Bruno, Duke McKenzie, Chris Eubank Jnr, David Haye and Lloyd Honeyghan.

As she moves through the divisions people will get to know her better and appreciate what we already know. That’s she’s the next superstar from south of the river.
