Charles Barkley said Friday he was “so pissed” at ESPN‘s coverage of the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly targeting UConn’s Dan Hurley to be their next head coach that he had to turn his TV off.
Barkley was particularly irked that instead of focusing most of their coverage on Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, ESPN spent the bulk of its time breaking down a team that’s “irrelevant.” The “Inside the NBA” analyst went onto call whoever runs ESPN‘s programming the “stupidest, most boneheaded people in the world.”
“I was so mad at ESPN yesterday,” Barkley told Dan Dakich of OutKick. “I love Danny Hurley, this has nothing to do with Danny Hurley. And good luck with him if he goes to the Lakers. But I was so pissed. With Game 1 of the Finals and Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals coming on, for them to spend the first hour talking about ‘What if Danny Hurley goes to the Lakers?’
“I was so pissed yesterday, I had to turn my TV off… This is how stupid they are. Y’all got the Stanley Cup Finals and the NBA Finals and y’all talking about a team that’s irrelevant. And I’m like, whoever’s doing their programming has got to be the stupidest, most boneheaded people in the world. If he goes, we’ll talk about it. But to just go in there and blow air for an hour and then say, ‘Oh, by the way, we got Game 1 of the Finals coming up tonight.’ I was like, who the hell is running their programming over there?… You got those games as a network. And you spent the whole time talking about ‘What if Danny Hurley goes to the Lakers?’
“I’m like, what kind of idiots are running this network? I said, ‘That was crazy’… I just thought it was so stupid of ESPN yesterday just like, ‘Wait a minute, y’all got the biggest game of the NBA season coming on tonight. And y’all spent the first hour talking about if Danny Hurley goes to the Lakers.’”
Coverage of the latest between Hurley and the Lakers continued Friday, with the reigning two-time NCAA champion now meeting with the team, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Hurley has been at UConn since 2018, helping bring the program back to prominence. All told, Hurley has a 140-58 overall record at UConn, including a 71-41 mark in conference play across the American and Big East. He stacked up the honors this year by winning the Big East and Naismith National Coach of the Year awards.
